The primary active compound in sassafras is safrole. Despite claims that safrole is carcinogenic, numerous scientific studies have found that safrole shows clinically significant anticarcinogenic action against multiple types of cancer, including lung cancer, liver cancer, and oral cancer. Additionally, it has documented antioxidant, antidiabetic, antibacterial, and antifungal benefits. Safrole is also a benzene-type stimulant and is psychoactive.
In small doses (0.5 ml or less) our sassafras tincture provides anti-inflammatory benefits and a gentle mood lift. In higher doses (0.5 ml – 1.0 ml or more) it provides a noticeable euphoria, deepened emotional response, and enhanced color and sound perception. The dropper can be used to measure dosage. Start with a small dose. Some people may be more sensitive than others. Sassafras exerts strong serotonergic activity. This tincture naturally contains high levels of safrole and is produced specifically for human consumption. However, it should not be used by those currently taking MAOIs or SSRIs.
